UNIONTOWN, Pa. - Penn State Fayette's women's basketball dropped a non-conference contest with Waynesburg on Saturday, falling 85-64 to their NCAA Division III foe. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Roaring Lions (3-4, 2-0 PSUAC) as they enter the winter break.
Freshman Caitlin Wontroba (Uniontown, Pa.) led Fayette with 25 points, while junior Kasey Ruble (Fairchance, Pa.) added 21 points and a team-high six rebounds and three assists. Junior Kaitlyn Novak (Bobtown, Pa.) added 11 points to round out the Roaring Lions in double figures.
A sloppy first half saw the Roaring Lions commit 18 turnovers, and Waynesburg outrebounded Fayette 52-31, including pulling down 23 offensive boards. The Lady Yellow Jackets attempted 45 free throws, connecting on 27. Despite struggling from behind the three-point arc, Waynesburg capitalized on a distinct size advantage with 26 second chance points compared with Fayette's five. The Lady Yellow Jackets shot only 2-for-14 from behind the arc.
Fayette trailed 11-0 to begin the game, and despite cutting the deficit to seven midway through the first half, they would never lead. The Roaring Lions shot 39 percent for the game, 21-for-54, including 4-for-12 from three-point range.
Waynesburg was led by Elaine Hasek with 19 points, including 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Hayden Giuliani added 14 for the Lady Yellow Jackets.
The Roaring Lions take a three week hiatus, returning to action on Saturday, Jan. 7 as they travel to PSUAC foe Penn College for a 1:00 p.m. tip.
